W.Gill Birstwith c.1830
A 'drum' wall timepiece, the 10" diameter dial with very shallow convexity, the movement sitting on a seatboard and fitted with passing strike on a bell. The hands are particularly fine, and the case is veneered in top quality fiddle back mahogany veneer.
Stock No.3311
This is a very unusual clock made to the highest standards. The hands and case are exceptional, as is the highly engineered bezel catch. The case has a large rear door, and a single side door with no lock or catch, relying on gravity to keep it closed.
John Gill is recorded working in Birstwith, a very small village to the West of Harrogate in Yorkshire, in 1838; Walter Gill in nearby Shipley. They are presumably related; Gill is a quite common name locally.
