Whitehurst Derby c.1840
A rare and very original quarter striking hook and spike wall clock by this prestigious maker, the the 10” octagonal dial with the signature and perimeter ring marked in gold, fronting an unnumbered eight day three train movement striking the hours on one bell, and the quarters on two further bells. The short pendulum has ‘IWD’ cast into the bob, and the weights similarly marked ‘IW’.
Stock No. 3401
This was probably made by John Whitehurst III, who took over the firm founded by his famous great uncle in 1834 on his father’s death. He himself died in 1855.
This is a rare three train form of the hook and spike type of clock of which the firm Whitehurst made many. It is particularly unusual in that it is not numbered, and the fact that it retains its signed pendulum and weights, and even the chain counterbalances.
