The movement is also signed on the backplate ‘Paul Garnier Paris’ , and the signature on the dial is an abbreviation of ‘Horloger Mechanicien de la Marine’ - in other words ‘Clockmaker and Mechanic to the Navy’. The convex glass is held in a finely tooled brass bezel.
Paul Garnier was one of the finest French nineteenth century makers of clocks and watches. He was born in 1801 and died in 1870, but the firm he founded in Paris continued until at least the first world war.
