Thos. Lee. Potton c.1790
A rare early wall clock, the 13" diameter wooden dial signed 'Thos. Lee, Potton', the fusee movement with anchor escapement fronted by a pair of 'pierced heart' tavern clock type hands, the case of oak with the primitive lower saltbox projection veneered in mahogany, and with a mahogany dial surround, and turned bezel, with integral bezel lock.
Stock No. 2954
The dial and surround are turned from a single piece of mahogany, and the movement is an interesting transition between verge and anchor escapement, with the back cock with a single leg very much in the manner of what one would expect of an earlier verge escapement, as is the tall narrow shape of the plates.
Thomas Lee, who is known to have made tavern clocks, is recorded working in Potton, Bedfordshire, in 1792, and was insolvent in 1797.
