'Siesta strike' was the standard striking arrangement adopted by French 'comtoise' clocks; that is, clocks from the Franche Comte part of North Eastern France, centred on Morez, near Besancon. From the eighteenth century onwards, the bulk of French clocks were made in this area. It comprises normal hour and half hour striking, but with an additional hour strike at two minutes past the hour. Supposedly, it is called, because the first striking would rouse the listener from their post prandial siesta, and the second could be actually counted to tell the sleepy frenchman the actual time.
