Rigby Charing Cross London c. 1820
A rococo Regency mantel timepiece, the fine chain fusee movement signed to the backplate ' Rigby Charing Cross London', and fronted by very delicate Vulliamy type 'pierced heart' steel hands. The dial has engine turned engraving, and sits in a heavily moulded brass case, all with the original gilding. Height: 8"
Stock No. 3305
Vulliamy and one or two other fine makers made similar high quality pieces, and there is speculation that they were all in fact made in the same workshop - perhaps Vulliamy's himself. This example has a very delicate pendulum with steel rod, and T-bar suspension. James Rigby is recorded working initially in Clerkenwell from 1795, and then at 8 Charing Cross Road from 1806 to 1830. He succeeded the famous John Leroux at this address, and was himself succeeded by Richard Morse in 1835.
