J. Thwaites for Jno. Burlingham, Lynn.  c.1820

A Georgian wall dial timepiece, with a 14” diameter wood dial, and fusee movement by J. Thwaites numbered 6326, fronted by typical Thwaites ‘pierced arrow’ brass hands, in a mahogany case with a moulded ‘Georgian’ bezel with integral lock.

Stock No. 3418

It is recorded that John Burlingham was a glove maker who came to (Kings) Lynn in 1781from Worcester, and married a sister of Daniel Catlin III, of an eminent Lynn clockmaking family. She was herself a watchmaker, and perhaps that influenced John Burlingham to change trades. He worked at 4, Tuesday Market Place as both glover and clockmaker until his death in 1829. It is however possible that he was more a retailer than a maker, as this clock was actually made by John Thwaites shortly before he entered partnership with George Reed to become Thwaites and Reed.
