Samuel Elford is recorded working in both Stalbridge North Dorset) and Sherborne between 1780 and 1788. It is speculation, but he may have lived in Stalbridge - a very small market town, and sold his clocks both there (where they would have Stalbridge as the location on the clock), and Sherborne, a much larger market town some six miles away.
