Saml. Elford Stalbridge c.1785

An impressive tavern clock with a 29” diameter round black dial with gilt arabic and roman numerals, above a ‘banjo’ shaped case with chinoiserie decoration on a black background, signed by the maker at the throat. The shaped removable door is locked at the top, and there are decorative shaped ‘ears’  beneath the dial. The timepiece weight driven movement sits on a seatboard, and is faced by the original brass ‘pierced heart’ hands. The overall height is 59”.

Stock No. 3435

Samuel Elford is recorded working in both Stalbridge North Dorset) and Sherborne between 1780 and 1788. It is speculation, but he may have lived in Stalbridge - a very small market town, and sold his clocks both there (where they would have Stalbridge as the location on the clock), and Sherborne, a much larger market town some six miles away.
