Edward Upjohn was a very interesting clockmaker, the founding father of a family of Devon clockmakers and associated tradesmen. He had no fewer than fifteen such descendants, including some who worked in London,  although the majority worked in Devon or nearby. He himself was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, where his earliest clocks were made. He married in 1709, but in 1723 he went to America until ill health forced him to return in 1726, when he set up in Topsham, Devon, then a considerable port. He left there for Exeter in 1738 where he stayed until his death in 1764.
