Hedge Colchester c. 1790

A superb Georgian wall timepiece, the 13 ½” diameter engraved and silvered brass dial signed ‘Hedge, Colchester’, the substantial fusee movement with original anchor escapement fronted by particularly fine pierced steel hands, in a mahogany pegged case with turned dial surround and moulded brass ‘Georgian’ bezel with lock.

Stock No. 3382

Nathaniel Hedge founded the famous business in Colchester in 1739, and it continued for several generations well into the nineteenth century. His son, also both Nathaniel and a clockmaker, set up a similar business in 1765. Fortunately, at that point they agreed to sign their clocks differently; the older business signed their clocks simply ’Hedge’, and the son ‘Nathaniel’ or ‘Nath. Hedge”. The father retired in 1772, and two further sons, John and Thomas, carried on the business after that. This clock is therefore by the original firm.
